Job Description
The Charge Nurse is an expert clinician who demonstrates a high level of knowledge and expertise in a specialty as well as general nursing.
The Charge Nurse consistently demonstrates excellence in all areas of nursing practice including nursing care delivery, staff education, and collaboration. Evaluates and works to improve the process of patient care delivery within the unit.
The Charge Nurse manages complex, unpredictable patient care situations and is a nursing shift leader. Serves as a clinical and operational resource to the nursing staff. The Charge Nurse serves as the mentor on the unit with the goal of increasing nurse engagement, professional development of their staff, and safe quality care with improved outcomes.
The scope of responsibility, duties and accountability at the facility department and position levels including knowledge and practice of the clinical/technical skills necessary to the position consistent with the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP) Nursing/Midwifery Competency Framework and Scope of Practice. Nursing job duties are to meet the Joint Commission International and the Plan of Care, and other regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Identifies and assesses patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations. Intervenes to provide a safe environment and evaluates effectiveness of intervention for patient.
- Provides expert comprehensive direct and indirect care to the specific populations needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family, and condition needs.

- Provides advanced assessment skills, integrating appropriate data sources to assess the signs, symptoms, reactions, behaviors, or general appearance to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics.
- Evaluates and works to improve the process of patient care delivery within the unit.
- Performs skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and the initiation of peripheral venous access.
- Serves as a clinical and operational resource for all nursing activities in the department. Provides assistance to co-workers, new staff, temporary staff and students.
- Delegates and assigns tasks to health care workers within the scope of their job responsibilities.
