Materials Engineer
Job Description
Contribute for the achievement of a good quality standards of any materials. Provide support to the operational teams whenever required. Should be fully aware of plant calibration, proportioning of mixes in accordance with approved mix designs and shall be able to rectify / adjust the mixes as and when required. Allocate daily work to the Laboratory Technicians & others coming under his control.
Responsibilities
• Allocate & supervise daily works of Laboratory Technicians and Lab Assistants coming under his control.
• Undertake sampling and testing duties as and when required.
• Developing the quality of asphalt mix designs (Marshall & Superpave).
• Implement initiative ideas and solutions for using all our resources.
• Ensure that all laboratory duties are done timely.
• Ensure all reports submitted by the laboratory have been verified and kept in record.
• Ensure that all the test results particularly failures are reported to the Lab & Materials Manager on a timely basis and assist in establishing Root Causes of any such failures together with Remedial Actions to avoid repeats.
• Make sure the maintenance program for all the laboratory equipment are completed on time and done properly.
• Ensure full compliance with the Colas’s SHE policies for all duties.
• Report any activity with a potential risk to the Lab & Materials Manager before such task is carried out.
• Responsible to cover the duties of Laboratory & Materials Manager during his absence.
• Make sure all failure and deficiencies observed in the laboratory are reported into the INC system
• Make sure all the laboratory testing are done with the latest version of standard
• Make sure all the laboratory test results are recorded in accordance with the quality manual requirements
Customer Service Responsibilities
• Liaise with Main contractor and consultants in day to day testing requirements and External Laboratories as and when necessary.
• Complaint handling - provide effective response to customers, thorough investigation of cause, and appropriate internal liaison/ reporting and assist in maintaining records in the Complaint System
Commercial Responsibilities
• Assist the Lab & Materials Manager on the internal evaluation of the service providers of the laboratory: suppliers, external laboratories, for a better selection and for a better advise to the procurement team.
Quality Control & Quality Assurance Responsibilities
• Build and maintain the management records of the laboratory.
• Make sure all the tests are done as per the latest version of Inspection Test Plan
HR Responsibilities
• Coach and train Laboratory employees as necessary to assist in their development and competencies.
• Proceed evaluation of the laboratory personnel twice a year
• Maintain and update the competency evaluation form of the laboratory personnel
SHEQ Responsibilities
• Shall demonstrate visible felt leadership, always Leading by example to influence appropriate behaviour, encouraging and coaching their direct reports in developing a positive business and safety culture within their work groups.
• Shall ensure that everyone (employees & contractors) within their area of responsibility works safely following Colas SHEQ standards, rules and procedures.
• To directly and actively praise safe working and challenge unsafe behaviour / conditions which are unsafe and to stop and rectify as appropriate.
• Encourage two-way communications and resolutions via Face to Face conversations with the work group.

Requirements:
Essential Qualifications
• Diploma or Degree preferably in Civil Engineering
Experience / Achievements
• Minimum 3 - 5 years experience as Senior Lab Technician or 2 years experience in the similar role.
Know-How
• Familiarity with International Standards like ASTM, AASHTO and BS.
• Shall be computer literate.
• Able to organise and prioritise own workload & Others
• Able to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
